Taxonomical Tyranny

Encroaching oblivion

by Helen Robertson

In nineteen seventy-two
At Tulane you tried
To induce straight attraction
In a gay man;
To unmake him.

Will I be reduced,
Cut down,
Trans no more?
Simply a woman I’d say.
Simply a man you.

In twenty eighteen
Your white house thought
To cage language with law
And define me away;
To force upon me an encroaching oblivion.

Would you play god and remake me
In your image? Young and strapping,
Muscles toned, oiled and handsome,
Nothing queer about me,
With a clear desire.
