Mutaphoria

The Words I was Fed

by Helen Robertson

This ugly thing extrudes from me;
Devours eyes, ears. Whispers
Its truth. On perception’s periphery
Subtly screams. Everything quiet now raucous.

Acclimation’s a curse. Nudge the baseline;
Experience shifts. It’s addictive.
Recognition no longer enough.

But if I withdraw — it won’t
Be bed down. I was, and will be,

Ever its home; poisoned no more.
