Crabgrass catches the gravel shoulder
where they cut the lights and spill
from their seats. Our family graveyard:
a dusky field fenced by loosestrife,
a humped, rough hewn damp
for fireflies to come, tilted
white markers nearing nightfall.
They scroll their fingertips over names
they know are there: Freelove, Silas Avery, Sarah—
There are others they’ve forgotten
where long meadow grasses have wound
us in green for a ghost-fawn to graze,
our wet brushing their shins.
Their ankle skin so close to bone.
